RICHARD WAGNER Organ Transcriptions Die Walküre: The Ride Of The Valkyries Parsifal: Prelude Die Meistersinger: Overture Die Walküre: Wotan's Farewell And Magic Fire Music Das Rheingold: Entrance Of The Gods Into Valhalla First released with the raw title, "Organ Orgy" in the mid 70's, this Anthony Newman recording created quite a stir as it was recordign within the massive acoustics of St. John the Divine Cathedral in New York City. The transcriptions of Wagner's opera music make full use of the separate organ cases of left / right front (chancel) and the rear trumpet and bombard pipes. It is much fun listening and Newman plays it all so well. A well recorded Mint LP was the source, all beautifully transferred to CD!

MARCEL DUPRÉ Le Chemin de la Croix (The Way of the Cross) This CD features Marcel Dupré playing his 14 improvisations inspired in 1931 by Paul Claudel's poems of the same title. It is personal, imaginative and moving both historically and religiously. The recording stems from the early 1950's and is rare to find on LP. The huge acoustics of St. Sulpice are well captured without loss of detail. The mono sound begs for some widening of the sound stage so we processed the recording with our stereo effect always judiciously chosen so as to not to intrude on the original mono sound.

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH AT SOISSONS
CATHEDRAL Prelude and Fugue in G major, BWV 550 Toccata and Fugue in F major, BWV 540 Prelude and Fugue in D minor, BWV 554 Marie Madeleine Duruflé, organist Prelude and Fugue in A minor, BWV 543 Fantasia and Fugue in A minor, BWV 561 Prelude and Fugue in B-flat major, BWV 560 Maurice Duruflé, organist It is amazing when these two organists play. It is Bach organ music with a kind of Gallic staccato touch, unique among most of Bach organ music recordings. Every effort was used to reduce background noise which intrudes during some of the pianissimi there by giving these recording up to date sound. The 1956 Gonzales Organ in the Soissons Cathedral has much in the way of baroque organ sound along with some massive low end thrusts making this ideal for Bach in a venue as large as this one. This is must have Duruflé as recorded in 1967/68.

BACH: Music of Jubilee, Bach
Favorites for Organ and Orchestra (1963) This Biggs recording has very good sound but was inflicted with a low hum and subsonic thumps from the conductor's foot cues, all removed here individually along with the hum with intruding on the sound of the music. This 1963 recording was made in the church where the famous Haydn "Lord Nelson Mass" was premiered back in 1798 which, we think, only adds to the festive nature of the music here performed, and is a stereo remake of an earlier Biggs Bach Jubilee recorded in Symphony, Boston in the early 1950's which is also available on page 1 of the Organ Loft Catalog. The orchestra here is Austrian and has that Vienna State Opera Orchestra sound, certainly with regards to the brass and woodwinds. All transferred to CD from a prime condition Columbia Stereo Reel Tape in the massive Haydn House tape collection.

FRENCH ORGAN MUSIC St. Louis des Invalides is the large military chapel which is part of Les Invalides which was built during the 17 Century to care for the wounded French soliders of Louis XIV's army. It is also the burial place for Napoleon and his brothers, and more recent French military leaders. The chapel was the venue for Berlioz's massive Requiem in the early 1840's. The acoustics are huge and while listening to this recording, the history of this fascinating place does come to mind. The sound on this CD is outstanding and the playing is more than adequate from Pierre Gazin. Oh yes! Les Invalides boasts one of the most impressive military museums in the world. Clothes and personal items of Napoleon abound therein, as well as military hardware, flags/banners and documents of several centuries. This is a must-see for any history enthusiast.
