NUNÓ: Himno Nacional Mexicano

These are spectacular Biggs performances as recorded in the National Auditorium, Mexico City following the 1957 inauguration concert of the massive Riojas-Tamburini organ (16,600+ pipes). The source LP is Columbia and was never released in the US.  The sound is quite good although the recording had AC hum which was carefully removed for this "labor of love"  transfer to CD.  You may be asking yourself, "Where has this been all my life?"  Well, you are not alone as we all asked the same question when the LP arrived at Haydn House as sent by an avid organ music collector.  The source LP was in very good shape too.  Don't let this release pass you by.

Highly recommended.

Richard Ellsasser, Organist
Hammond Castle Organ, Gloucester, Massachusetts

RICHARD ELLSASSER PLAYS THE HAMMOND CASTLE ORGAN
CHARLES-MARIE WIDOR: Organ Symphony Nº 5 in F Major for Organ, Op. 42
GEORGE WHITEFIELD CHARDWICK: Theme Variations and Fugue
JOHN KNOWLES PAINE: Variations on Austria

Around the time of Virgil Fox's "reign" at the famous Hammond Castle in Gloucester, Massachusetts (USA) another virtuoso organist made a few recordings on the massive Hammond Castle Organ.  The results were very successful and caused Nonesuch to issue two LPs with incredible detail the including deep, visceral bass this pipe organ can produce. There is very wide dynamics too.  The recordings were not completely free of intrusions however. There a few rustlings and coughs and the organ console electronics caused clicks and pops to inflict the master tape, similar to those from minor LP scratches.  All has been removed with this CD transfer thanks to digital editing.  The Widor is incredible.  To fill the CD we included two unusual works by American composers, Chadwick and Paine.  This is a must have CD.

BACH: THE ART OF THE FUGUE -  COMPLETE: Contrapuncti 1 through 14
Chorale Prelude: Wenn wir in hochsten Noten sind"
(When in the Hour of Deepest Need)

Haydn House continues with more E. Power Biggs. This release is taken from very rare RCA 78 rpm discs and carefully transferred with noise reduction efforts not pushed to the limits.  Biggs recorded these in the late 1930's shortly after the Aeolian-Skinner Organ was installed in the then, Germanic Museum - now Busch-Reisinger Museum - at Harvard University.  The Chorale Prelude was included as it was the "filler" on the original two volumes 78 rpm release. This is priceless Biggs and is at the foundation of his vast recordings legacy.

What a spectacular find this mint 2-LP set is!  Now on 2 CD and carefully transferred too.  All 24 Fantasy Pieces will take your imagination for a trip around the cosmos if not beyond. The famous French organist, Gaston Litaize, to whom these organ works are dedicated, plays each work with a sense of deep feeling and never rushes with this Vierne collection of short organ works composed between 1925 and 1927,  the most popular being the "Carillon de Westminster".  The sound is rich with a solid, beep bass from the organ which dates back to 1878 and has had several restorations since then.

A Cavaillé-Coll organ was built for the home of Marcel Dupré's father near the turn of the 20th century in Meudon located just west of Paris. Rolande Falcinelli plays while Dupré looks on during this fascinating 1968 recording.  It gives us the inside look and sound of Dupré's private home pipe organ played by his favorite pupil. All is played with virtuosity and zest with intimate acoustics.  Volumes 1 and 2 of this series can be found on page 3 of the Organ Loft Collection.

REGINALD FOORT - BOSTON SYMPHONY HALL
BOELLMANN: Suite Gothique - Gothic Minuet, Prayer to Our Lady
DUBOIS: Toccata; BACH: Toccata and Fugue in D Minor; BACH: When Tou Art Near
HANDEL: Arioso; REUBKE: Finale from Organ Sonata (94th Psalm)
HANDEL: Arrival of the Queen of Sheba; HANDEL: Suite from “Water Music” - Hornpipe, Air and Coro

Reginald Foort (1893-1980) was named staff organist of the BBC in 1936, left England in 1951, never to return. Educated at the Royal Academy of Music, became "legend among the many British cinema organists" of his time due to his incredible playing technique and choice of organ register.  This recording gives us familiar music but with powerful playing and unique organ sound.  The Symphony Hall Organ is pushed to its limits here with "new" effects, perfectly chosen and very appropriate to the music. We highly recommend this CD.  A well-chosen audio effect complements the recording with width and space added to the original mono sound which also has deep low-end bass.
