This is one of the rarer E. Power Biggs recordings of the mid 1950's of 16th and 17th century Spanish and Portuguese Organ Music. The pipe organs recorded are those in the  Toledo Cathedral, Spain, Cathedral of El Pilar, Zaragoza, Spain, University of Coimbra, Portugal, National Monument of Mafra, Portugal, Royal Palace of Madrid, Spain, Cathedral of La Seo, Zaragoza, Spain, Church of the Incarnation, Lisbon, Portugal.  Please do not confuse this release with the History Organs of Sapin which was recorded a decade later.  The sound is superb and full bodied.

When Pierre Cochereau and Brass plus timpani combined to play music at Notre Dame in Paris, a hair-raising musical experience took place.   The first half of this uniue CD release does just that.  Christopher Herrick gives us much of the same less additional musicians, but the ceremony effect does not deminish.  Listen to the

Eclectic, unique, reverent, are the adjective that can be written here again with J. E. Hansen playing very special organ music of 17th Century Holland.  Few words can be added about the Marcussen Organ as is ranks very high worldwide as one of the best Baroque organs of Europe and is well recorded here.     IN STEREO

Six Concertos for Organ, After Italian Masters

$12.00 per CD

One of the last recordings made by E. Power Biggs on the majestic Silbermann Organ in the Mariendom, Freiberg Germany.  Both organ and church acoustics are in perfect match with plenty of detail, all in wonderful sound.  The Italian Masters treated here by Walther are Vivaldi, Albinoni, Torelli, Gentili and Taglietti whose influence on German composers was considerable during the 18th century.  Walther, being Bach's contemporary and close friend, is worthy of much more listening these days as both composers shared mutual musical inspiration.    IN STEREO

To listen to Franck Organ Music on one of the most famous Dutch organs as recorded in the early 1950's is truly something extraordinary.  The performances are deliberate and reverent as Fieka Asma brings to us the more familiar Franck organ works.  We've issued this old recording as the result of many requests.  The Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony with Mr. Asma can be found in our main catalog at http://www.haydnhouse.com/HH2.htm

It is always encouraging when customers provide good pressings. This time we had a choice of 3 different pressing of the same LP issue in order to make the best transfer to CD.  All recorded Symphony Hall, Boston on the 1949 Aeolian Skinner Organ.  As for the Poulenc Concerto, we fixed the pitch problems occurring near the end of the work.  Burgin, long-time concert master and assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony, conducts with the same commitment as the more familiar Munch recording of same.

Jeanne Demessieux, long-time organist at La Madeleine in Paris was one of the first organists to  record organ music on the Ziegler Organ, once at Victoria Hall, in Geneva, Switzerland. Ms. Demessieux's Bach is uniquely lyrical, insightful and never hectic. The early 1950's mono sound is very good with some hefty low-end complementing the rest of the organ.  The instrument was completely destroyed by fire in 1884 to a degree that melted all the pipes and the impressive organ woodworks.  A best seller!  High Quality MP3 Sample here

The final LP transfer from the famous Dupré 1959 recording sessions.  After the first audition of this Franck Organ disc, the best and appropriate statement was, "Franck should be canonized!" This is the effect this recording can have with Marcel Dupré plying Franck on the Saint-Sulpice Organ.  It is revelatory in every way and the mid section the Grande Pièce could force tears.  As with the other two Dupré CDs below, careful efforts were employed to reduce some of the venue noises with out affecting the music and rough splices were fixed.  High Quality MP3 Sample here

Two more LPs on one CD from the famous Dupré 1959 recording sessions.  This is a 19th century Bach rendition on an organ that gives a "new" aural perspective of Bach's organ.  The question to be answered is, Would Bach have approved of his music played on an ultra-French organ in  expansive acoustics? You will have to answer for him.  It's spectacular in an unusual realm.   Rough splices were fixed and some of the venue noise was removed without touching the music; all this with present day digital editing. Again, a must have CD!
