MR. STRAUSS COMES TO BOSTON  - Music Johann Strauss, Jr.
SULLIVAN: Overture to "Iolanthe"
Reznicek: Donna Dianna Overture
WEBER: Abu Hasan Overture

$12.00 per CD

This rather rare recording of 1954 commemorates, by way of waltzes and polkas, the 1872 visit to Boston by the the famous Waltz King.    Arthur Fiedler reproduced the program somewhat by recording the music in Symphony Hall, Boston.  The sound is mono but very up-to-date with much of the legendary Symphony Hall acoustics.  Included is a short story with more details of the visit which did include 20,000 musicians!   We added some Fielder 45 rpm favorites to fill up the CD.

Too often we get too used to what certain instruments should sound like. Or,  American orchestras seem to all sound the same there days.   The Czech Philharmonic, on the other hand,  has maintained its unique playing, phrasing and rhythmic traditions and this CD is another proof of how wonderful and truly special that sound is as highlighted by their woodwind players on this CD transfer. The result is Mozart Wind Music for the gods.

BRAHMS: Symphony 4
HAYDN
: Symphony 104, "London"

$12.00 per CD

The April 1950 mono recordings of Brahms Symphony No. 4th and Haydn Symphony No. 104, "London" are now on one CD.... at last.    This Brahms 4th ranks high on the list of historic recordings and  is a more zestful performance than the RCA stereo version which was to come 8 years later.  The Haydn will make you ask the question?  Why didn't Munch record more Haydn? Source materials were "never played condition" LPs - first edition plum labels with gold printing. These are NOT present day "polite" performances. HQ MP3 sample of BRAHMS here    HQ MP3 sample of HAYDN here

RESPIGHI: Pines of Rome
RESPIGHI: Fountains of Rome

$12.00 per CD

This is the companion disc of the CD offered above.  Antal Dorati pulling out all the stops again by way of the Minneapolis SO. Also recorded in 1953 and is very good in all respects.  The Apian Way Pines music is played so deliberately as though Dorati not only envisioned Roman Legions marching on the famous road but all the tormenta (war machinery) being hauled along too with prominent and growling low brass. It's in a class by itself.  Dynamic range is spectacular. This LP to CD transfer, as below, is outstanding in every way. High Quality MP3 Sample here

RESPIGHI: Roman Festivals
RESPIGHI: Church Windows

$12.00 per CD

The famous HiFi Demo Record is back boasting some of some of  the most unusual music ever composed with Antal Dorati pulling out all the stops by way of the Minneapolis SO. This was a Mercury Living Presence spectacular of 1953. Audio fanatics wanted to have that MSO gong - in the Church Windows - to break forth in their living rooms. We wonder how many living room windows broke as a result. This LP to CD transfer is outstanding in every way. A best seller!
