JOHANNES BRAHMS: Variations on a Theme by Haydn
FRANZ LISZT: Les Préludes
GEORGES BIZET: Carmen Suite - Ten Orchestral Excerpts
Philadelphia Orchestra,  Eugene Ormandy, conductor
The Brahms and Liszt were tranferred from a quite rare 1949 Columbia 10" LP with exceptional dynamic range for that time with "muscular" low end and no fake reverb added.  (That intrusive effect was to come later for Columbia's Academy of Music recordings). The Bizet Carmen Suite although a monophonic recording, was issued ten years later and recorded in the reverberant Broadwood Hotel Ballroom in Philadephia. All is vintage Ormandy and the solo work is what one can expect from the Philadelphia Orchestra first chair players.   A must have CD!

ALEXANDER GLAZUNOV
Suite from “The Middle Ages” Op. 79
Moscow Radio & Television Symphony Orchestra, Vladimir Fedoseyev, conductor
Mostly rare Prokofiev especially the Cantata "They Are Seven" based on words in ancient cuneiform of a Chaldean Ritual. The Glazunov is an ultra romantic era "view" of music from the Middle Ages. All is played with commitment and with the Russian flare.  Is the low brass up front sonically?  Yes.

Nº 5 in D, BWV 1050; Nº 6 in B flat, BWV 1051 and Adenda to Nº 1 and Nº 5
New York Sinfonietta / Max Goberman, conductor
Issued privately on a 2 LP Library of Recorded Masterpieces set in 1960, Max Goberman and his band created quite a stir with this elaborately produced and recorded issue of all the Brandenburgs.  Also are adenda such as the "earlier version of the harpsichord cadenza for Concerto No. 5 and final sections of Concerto No. 1 which were used later by Bach in his Sinfonia in F (BWV 1070)   This transfer to CD was made from pristine LPs - Library of Recorded Masterpieces - set in new condition.  The original dry and pinched acoustics are been tastefully improved here for  a much greater aural effect which better complements the music.  You are going to love this Haydn House re-release.
