SCHUBERT:
Symphony Nº 8 in B Minor "Unfinished" One of the rarest Dorati Mercury releases is the Schumann 4th Symphony, recorded in stereo with the London Symphony. It is a unique, powerful performance and the source for this release is the London-based, Antal Dorati Centenary Society. The Unfinished with the Chicago Symphony was recorded in mono and has been available on our website for several years but coupled with the Schumann Spring Symphony under Hans Swarowsky. This recording along with the Walter Susskind Schubert Tragic Symphony is available below. . | ||||

SCHUBERT:
Symphony Nº 4 in C Minor 'Tragic" (London
Symphony)
All three works on this CD have been previous Haydn House releases. The Schubert 4th with Walter Susskind conducting is our favorite recording of this music. It is thoughtful, never pushed, and with excellent Mercury sound but with severe tape hiss and unusual upper-bass noise underneath the recording. W. B.-P. painstakenly removed these problems letting the recording blossom forth the way the musicians and the engineers intended originally. The Schumann Spring and the Haydn Overture (sourced for a half-track reel tape) were reworked as well.

Frank Brieff |
MAHLER: Symphony Nº 1 in D Major "Titan" - with "Blumine Movement This Mahler 1st Symphony recording was the very first ever issued to included the "Blumine" Movement that Mahler originally composed for the work. He later discarded "Blumine" section because he felt it was a redundancy. The full explanations as to why it wound up in the hands of the New Haven (Connecticut) Symphony is readily available on the internet. This recording has a kind of historical significance because of it. The performance is quite good and the recording has plenty of dynamic range as recorded in 1968 at the spacious Woolsey Hall on the Yale University campus. Mr. Brieff was once a violist in the Toscanini / NBC Symphony and and has a unique perspective with this music. His most popular release features short works for violin and orchestra with Isaac Stern.

Eduard van Beinum |
BRUCKNER: Symphony Nº 8 in C Minor
Ranked as one of the "top shelf" Bruckner 8th ever. Recorded in mono in 1956 in a performance that is forceful in brass. d van Beinum uses the Robert Haas version here. There is no sluggishness either. (Making it slower does not make it more reverent!) The opening of the 4th movement in the mp3 sample tells all. The added stereo effect is an added bonus creating a wide sonic stage with detailed depth. ( The effect can be defeated by setting your amp to mono.) Upper bass hum had been removed and a slight bass boost has been added to bring this remastering over the top. The rest of the EVB's Bruckner recordings are available below. The Concertgebouw Orchestra is magnificent with its special, admired sonic signature.

BRUCKNER: Symphony Nº 5 in B-Flat Major This incredible Bruckner recording never received a truly satisfying sonic improvement until now. It is a concert recording of March 12, 1959 but recorded in mono. There were many audience noise intrusion with minimum removal efforts but now, we removed 95 percent of them. The original recording equipment produced a low end hum as well and this has been removed. The overall bass of the recording was thin and this too, has been fixed. Our stereo effect enhancement was added to the final results and brings the performance way over the top where it belongs. This is now the famous Van Beinum Bruckner 5th resting in the sonic glory it truly deserves with the unique Concertgebouw Orchestra and sonic signature we all enjoy. The brass playing will make send you into orbit. The Bruckner 7th and 9th with Van Beinum is also available. Please see below.

ANDRÉ JOLIVET:
Symphonie Nº 1 One of our more unique CDs of
modern music which takes hold of your imagination from start to finish.
All is beautifully performed and well recorded. The Jolivet Symphony was
recorded slightly shy in the bass so more was added to give the
performance more impact. The stereo image is typical ORTF with plenty of
width and a locked in center image. Both these works are well liked
here.

BRUCKNER: Symphony
Nº
7 in E Major
One of the best Bruckner 7th ever as recorded in May of 1953! And it is with the Concertgebouw Orchestra with is sonic signature, not like a generic European orchestra it has become of late. We've taken a mint LP copy, removed the underlying hum which was evident throughout and added our ambient stereo effect to widen the soundstage. The outcome is a sonic knockout with hefty brass and a solid bass foundation. Van Beinum was a Bruckner master in all respects conducting an orchestra with a longtime Bruckner tradition. The more Van Beinum you hear the more you want. Check out our Composers' Index for more Van Beinum in out catalog.

The Fine Arts Quartet
|
HAYDN: String Quartets Opus 74, Nos. 1, 2 and 3 The first in a series of CDs of all the string quartets of Franz Joseph Haydn as played by The Fine Arts Quartet with Leonard Sorkin and Abram Loft, violins; Bernard Zaslav, viola; and George Sopkin, cello. The playing is honest, straightforward with a strong Viennese influence. The sound is very good and close with a kind of sonic intimacy as though the quartet is playing just for you! We hope you will demand more from this unique Haydn String Quartets series. As one colleague put it, "These performances can be included in the best Haydn Quartet playing ever and the sound is 21st century too!"

Daphnis et Chloé (complete)
Another early Mercury
recording - December,1954 - quite similar in sound to the Bartok below.
It was quite
hard to find in decent LP condition for our transfer to CD. Numerous
requests made this all happen. Assisting is the Macalester College
Choir and captured in perfect balance with the orchestra. This is
must have Dorati as well as the Bartok recording below.

BARTOK: Concerto for Orchestra Antal Dorati pulls out all the stops again with the Minneapolis SO. The dynamic range (soft to loud) is incredible within this 1953 recording. It is typical Mercury one microphone sound with brilliant strings and forward brass. Many have asked us to release this recording but finding a mint pressing was quite difficult. Finally we secured a mint pressing and it is of the first edition, deep groove pressing run. This is must have Dorati who championed Bartok's music throughout his long conducting career. As this Bartok Concerto for Orchestra recording is under 35 minutes, it was decided to include on this CD the original remastered mono version followed by a stereo effect version of the same mono recording in order to widen the stage image and add a bit more acoustics to this incredible performance. Oh yes, a third choice will be available: just switch the stereo effect version to mono and listen with added acoustics! Final thought: Digital age reverb possibilities are limitless and can enhance a recording without adding artificially sounding, "old era" effects in the process. A customer review here

BOCCHERINI TRIOS Is music a series of musical phrases made up of notes? Or, is music a series of notes making up phrases? The correct answer is "yes" to the first question. Present day string playing seems to favor the second question. It seems that the printed scores are not sheets of staves of stems and circles/dots but of stems and little bananas! The effect is commonly referred to as either "ya-ya" or "banana note" playing which plagues our orchestras and string ensembles today with only a few exceptions. To drive the message home, this very rare recording gives us a good example of playing string instruments with the first question in mind, that is, playing music and not playing a series of notes. It is all masterful throughout although the source recording was often played and taken from a tough, 1950 green label Westminster LP. This CD is too good to overlook. |

BEETHOVEN Back in the catalog after a long absence. Being recorded in 1960 points to the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Van Beinum and the wonderful sound of this orchestra back then is in full bloom here especially the woodwind playing. Very special Beethoven is the end result. This is a must have Pastoral as the audio sample well demonstrates. |

RÓZSA These recording have been in our archives for quite some time and demonstrate orchestral works of the Rózsa which are not available on CD. The performances are first rate and have quite bit of the composers ability to develop great themes which are, of course, abundant here and in his very popular film music. The sound is quite good and with a sound stage quality about it. As a filler, we included the very rare 78 RPM mono recording of one of Max Steiner's orchestra works. Wonderful music on all fronts! |
