BRUCKNER: Symphony Nº 5 in B-Flat Major
This incredible Bruckner recording never received a truly satisfying sonic improvement until now. It is a concert recording of March 12, 1959 but recorded in mono. There were many audience noise intrusion with minimum removal efforts but now, we removed 95 percent of them. The original recording equipment produced a low end hum as well and this has been removed. The overall bass of the recording was thin and this too, has been fixed. Our stereo effect enhancement was added to the final results and brings the performance way over the top where it belongs. This is now the famous Van Beinum Bruckner 5th resting in the sonic glory it truly deserves with the unique Concertgebouw Orchestra and sonic signature we all enjoy. The brass playing will make send you into orbit. The Bruckner 7th and 9th with Van Beinum is also available. Please see below.

BARTOK
Divertimento for String Orchestra
Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta
These Bartok performances have now become rather rare and for no good reason. The Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta has many competitors including the famous Reiner/CSO but this Wand recording of it is more intimate and more direct, same for the less famous Divertimento for Strings. The stereo sound is full bodied very good with a wide stage. Please listen to the mp3 sample for proof.$12.00 per CD

MAHLER: Symphony Nº 4 in G Major (Margaret Ritchie, soprano )
FRANCK: Psyché - Symphonic Poem
Wonderful performances here! These early 1950's Amsterdam recordings have been elusive in recent years as more recent recordings of same have been released but with far less élan and insight brought forth by Eduard van Beinum and his Concertgebouw Orchestra. I say his as it had the Mengelberg and "his" sonic signature which is but a memory when one listens to the ACO today. The added stereo effect was judiciously added for up-to-date listening to widen the sonic stage without dumbing down the original mono sound. The Franck Psyché is a "religious" experience and demos the huge range of repertoire possessed by van Beinum as he swings from Mahler to Franck. The AC hum "under" on the original sound has been finally(!) eliminated throughout.$12.00 per CD

WAGNER
Die Götterdâmerung: Siegfried's Funeral Music / Immolation Scene*
Tristan und Isolde: Prelude, Liebesnacht and Liebestod
Another rare Ormandy / Philadelphia recording!. Recorded in January and November of 1952 in the Academy of Music. this CD was transferred from a near mint Columbia "6 eye" LP with Ormandy and his Philadelphia Orchestra with incredible passion, lush strings and solid brass. Margaret Harshaw sings the "Immolation Scene" giving a performance that can challenge the so-called established best. This is a "must have" CD along with the Ormandy CD below.$12.00 per CD

WAGNER: "Parsifal" - orchestral highlights 1. Prelude;
2. Transformation Scene & Closing Scene - Act I; 3. Klingsor’s Magic Garden;
4. Good Friday Spell; 5. Closing Scene - Act III
One of the rare Ormandy / Philadelphia recordings! Rarer still is when a recording of Parsifal Orchestral Highlights is issued. This recording was realized in the early 1950's and is quite a surprise. The lush Philly strings is ever present, the famous woodwind section is within and the brass is revelation. The source was a first pressing, white label, "6 eye" Columbia LP. The sound is dated but with enough clarity to serve the performance admirably. However, the final minute of the second side "features" a slight unsteady pitch, but we tamed this minor problem as best we could. The cause of this is a defect in the master tape used to cut the LP. Please don't let that stop you from buying this unique Ormandy / Philadelphia CD.$12.00 per CD

BRUCKNER: Symphony Nº 9 in D Minor
The success of our Bruckner 7th as listed below, along with many email praises and requests put us to work on one of the best recordings of the Bruckner 9th - some say that it is THEE best - as recorded in September of 1956. We have added our stereo effect to this recording to give it a sense of spread and depth which can only enhance this wonderful recording.

These familiar works were recorded in concert in Tokyo, Japan with splendid sound and incredible dynamics range. Most of the older Soviet recordings only gave us a sonic peek at the power of this orchestra. All is exposed here, including the powerful brass sections and the percussion. The performances are heart rending, pushed to the limit. Tchaikovsky fans must have this CD. It is unmatched on all fronts.$12.00 per CD

These familiar works were recorded at the Salle Wilfrid Pelletier in Montreal in 1975. Thanks heavens they were as both are spectacular realizations. The overall sound is not bad and we did our best to bring to this level without intruding on the music itself. The Montreal Symphony hold nothing back here give its all to Steinberg's interpretations. A well chosen Haydn House stereo effect was added to the original mono sources with fine results.$12.00 per CD

Before Antal Dorati embarked on his complete Haydn Symphonies project for London/Decca during the 1970's, he had already recorded several Haydn Symphonies for Mercury "Living Presence" including the three works on this CD: the "Surprise" and the "Drum Roll" with the Philharmonia Hungarica - in the massive Vienna Konzerthaus in 1962 - and "The Clock" with the London Symphony - at Watford Town Hall, near London in 1957. The performances, sound and transfer make this CD a "must have" for all Haydn enthusiasts.$12.00 per CD

TOLIA NIKOPROWETZKY: Hommage à Antonio Gaudi*
One of our more unique CDs of modern music which takes hold of your imagination from start to finish. All is beautifully performed and well recorded. The Jolivet Symphony was recorded slightly shy in the bass so more was added to give the performance more impact. The stereo image is typical ORTF with plenty of width and a locked in center image. Both these works are well liked here.

BRUCKNER: Symphony Nº 7 in E Major
One of the best Bruckner 7th ever as recorded in May of 1953! And it is with the Concertgebouw Orchestra with is sonic signature, not like a generic European orchestra it has become of late. We've taken a mint LP copy, removed the underlying hum which was evident throughout and added our ambient stereo effect to widen the soundstage. The outcome is a sonic knockout with hefty brass and a solid bass foundation. Van Beinum was a Bruckner master in all respects conducting an orchestra with a longtime Bruckner tradition. The more Van Beinum you hear the more you want. Check out our Composers' Index for more Van Beinum in out catalog.

The Fine Arts Quartet

HAYDN: String Quartets Opus 74, Nos. 1, 2 and 3
The first in a series of CDs of all the string quartets of Franz Joseph Haydn as played by The Fine Arts Quartet with Leonard Sorkin and Abram Loft, violins; Bernard Zaslav, viola; and George Sopkin, cello. The playing is honest, straightforward with a strong Viennese influence. The sound is very good and close with a kind of sonic intimacy as though the quartet is playing just for you! We hope you will demand more from this unique Haydn String Quartets series. As one colleague put it, "These performances can be included in the best Haydn Quartet playing ever and the sound is 21st century too!"

RAVEL: Daphnis et Chloé (complete)
Another early Mercury recording - December,1954 - quite similar in sound to the Bartok below. It was quite hard to find in decent LP condition for our transfer to CD. Numerous requests made this all happen. Assisting is the Macalester College Choir and captured in perfect balance with the orchestra. This is must have Dorati as well as the Bartok recording below.

BARTOK: Concerto for Orchestra
Antal Dorati pulls out all the stops again with the Minneapolis SO. The dynamic range (soft to loud) is incredible within this 1953 recording. It is typical Mercury one microphone sound with brilliant strings and forward brass. Many have asked us to release this recording but finding a mint pressing was quite difficult. Finally we secured a mint pressing and it is of the first edition, deep groove pressing run. This is must have Dorati who championed Bartok's music throughout his long conducting career. As this Bartok Concerto for Orchestra recording is under 35 minutes, it was decided to include on this CD the original remastered mono version followed by a stereo effect version of the same mono recording in order to widen the stage image and add a bit more acoustics to this incredible performance. Oh yes, a third choice will be available: just switch the stereo effect version to mono and listen with added acoustics! Final thought: Digital age reverb possibilities are limitless and can enhance a recording without adding artificially sounding, "old era" effects in the process. A customer review here

THREE SYMPHONIES OF FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN
Symphony Nº 45 in F Sharp Minor "Farewell" / Symphony Nº 95 in C Minor
Symphony Nº 101 in D "Clock"
These performances range from 1927 to 1935 and are remastered from very rare 78 rpm releases recorded in London. We removed the clicks and pops and reduced some of the surface noise but never went beyond our artistic barrier in noise reduction technique, as we continue celebrate this anniversary year Haydn and his music. Sir Henry Wood conducts the LSO with a spirited Farewell" including horns in the upper register, a unique choice considering the 1934 recording year. Sir Hamilton Harty conducts the LSO with a unique "95" recorded in 1935 and oddly enough, the best sounding of the three recordings, Harty conducts the Hallé in a 1927 "Clock". Due to time constraints, the massive third movement of the "Clock" was edited in order to fit the 78 rpm set. Not so here! We fixed all to give, finally, a complete performance. We think Sir Hamilton would approve totally......and so would Haydn. A customer review here

During the 1960's Decca US issued a number of recordings with Max Rudolf and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. These performances had a unique dedication behind them, both from musicians and audio engineers. The results were quite spectacular although the stereo stage was a bit exaggerated and the LP pressings ranged from bad to good and could have been factors that brought and end to this series. An avid customer provided us with clean near mint pressings with which to work. The end results of our remastering fixes all and bring forth these spirited recordings to the place they deserve. German conductor, Max Rudolf, led the Cincinnati Symphony for 12 seasons -1958 to 1970. This 2 CD set has nearly 2½ hours of good music both familiar and eclectic. BOCCHERINI TRIOS
Trio Nº 5 in C Major, Op. 35 / Trio Nº 2 in G Major, Op. 35 / Trio Nº 4 in D Major, Op. 35Is music a series of musical phrases made up of notes? Or, is music a series of notes making up phrases? The correct answer is "yes" to the first question. Present day string playing seems to favor the second question. It seems that the printed scores are not sheets of staves of stems and circles/dots but of stems and little bananas! The effect is commonly referred to as either "ya-ya" or "banana note" playing which plagues our orchestras and string ensembles today with only a few exceptions. To drive the message home, this very rare recording gives us a good example of playing string instruments with the first question in mind, that is, playing music and not playing a series of notes. It is all masterful throughout although the source recording was often played and taken from a tough, 1950 green label Westminster LP. This CD is too good to overlook.

The performances are first rate and have quite bit of the composers ability to develop great themes which are, of course, abundant here and in his very popular film music.
