$12.00 per CD

There are few opera CDs in the Haydn House ColLection.  This one really does it on all fronts.
The arias have never been on CD until now and a few of the duets have not either.  Tagliavini and Tassinari were husband and wife and the duets are incredible with plenty of word interpretation and feeling and recorded in Italy in mid-late 40's.  The arias were recorded in New York following Tagliavini's post war appearance at the Met and transferred from 45 rpm discs.   Bravissimo!

Horst Stein

HUGO WOLF ORCHESTRAL MUSIC
Penthesilia - Symphonic Poem in One Movement
Der Corregidor - Suite

$12.00 per CD

The recent passing of Horst Stein can only demand the issue of this very unique CD.  Stein seemed to be always "there" but overlooked except for a small but devoted following worldwide.     Wolf composed many songs - mostly for baritone- and seldom approached composing for orchestra.  These two composition are wonderful and deserve a much larger audience.   The source was near mint pressing and recorded in wonderful sound.  You will like this release.

HILDE RÖSSEL MAJDAN SINGS HUGO WOLF

$12.00 per CD

This comes to you as the results of several requests and is a very rare find too.  Rössel-Majdan sings with extreme sensitivity which results in an unmatched distillation of 15 well selected Wolf lieder. The Viennese singing tradition is in full swing here too, like frosting on a very good cake with seconds provided by Eric Werba.  Full listing of songs is available upon request at HaydnHouse@comcast.net    High Quality MP3 PRO sample here

Trio Sonata in E Flat Major (Oboe, Viola and 2 Harpsichords)

There has a been a unfavorable rise of criticism recently in regards to recent so-called "historically informed performances." This criticism seems to center around the infusion of too much preparation and fussing around with the scores to a degree that it gets in the way of the music and the composer.  Earlier, beginning in the late 50's, a group of conductors and musicians who wanted to get back to the original interpretations using period instruments, research and playing tradition to rid performances of unnecessary 19 century influences.  One hero of this group was August Wenzinger and his Scola Cantorum Basiliensis.  As  result, this CD gives us Telemann that is up front and to the point with plenty of enthusiastic playing.

MOZART: Symphony
29 in A Major, KV. 201

$12.00 per CD

These two works conducted by Eduard van Beinum are at the very top of the list and have been rather neglected since they appeared in this country on Epic LPs during the mid 1950's.  This is a "must have" Van Beinum CD.    High Quality MP3 PRO sample here

MICHAEL HAYDN
Symphony in D Minor
Symphony in G Major (with Mozart’s Introduction, K.444)
Symphony in D Major (Turkish Suite for Votaire’s “Zaire”)

$12.00 per CD

This is a wonderful recording of music of Franz Joseph Haydn's younger brother, Michael. The performances are intense and reveal the craft of the brother of the more famous Haydn. The G Major Symphony was once labeled as Mozart's Symphony No. 37(!) but he only composed the introduction out of admiration for the composer's work.   The Turkish Suite is filled with drums and cymbal, a kind of forerunner to Mozart's opera, "Abduction from the Seraglio."

The session venue is Kingsway Hall which only adds to the breathtaking sonics transferred without a any manipulations except for the removal of unwanted sonic intrusions.  Truly a master recording similar to our own orchestral recording efforts.

$20.00 / 2 CD SET

Elusive, vintage recordings of a master Haydn conductor!  These superb recordings date from the early 1950's when several non-major record companies were issuing LPs of unknown Haydn. Hermann Scherchen was the leader and Wöldike was the major follower during those years conducting Haydn with the same orchestra.  These are his Haydn recordings from Denmark and are top notch and sensitive.  The "Maria Theresia" Symphony features trumpets and French horns and the effect is quite impressive.  The "Heiligmesse" is a very unique and wonderful performance.  High Quality MP3 PRO sample here

Popular demand has resulted in the release of all the early 1950's recordings of George Szell conducting the New York Philharmonic. Toscanini said of Teresa Stich-Randall, “She is the find of the century.” She did not stay in the USA - She was a Connecticut native - but centered her career in Austria where she excelled the Mozart and Strauss, adopting the German/Austrian lyric soprano singing style.  She died in July, 2007 at the age of 79 leaving a superb legacy.  This 1964 recording was made in the Mozart Hall, Vienna with great backup by the the VRSO conducted by Laszlo Somogyi.  Highly recommended too is the Mozart C Minor Mass CD found on page 8 of the HH Catalog, another Stich-Randall must have.   High Quality MP3 PRO sample here    IN STEREO

To quote the LP jacket notes: "What is presented here is concise, and in the full spirit of the original."  Most important of all is the great Ferenc Fricsay is on the podium. A near perfect domestic Decca pressing was used for the transfer to CD.  The sound is typical and good mid 1950's DGG and the performance is A++.   High Quality MP3 PRO sample here

These are two mono recordings of the early 1950's and demo how thorough George Szell had prepared his orchestra for the recording sessions.   Minor pitch problems have been corrected and the sound is now more uniform from the beginning to the end of each work.  Also, we tamed the abrasive sound too.    The Schumann is in a special class. $12.00 per CD

This recording has been part of the Haydn House collection since 1963.   It is in a special class and was recorded in the mid 1950's and was transferred with care and a great deal of nostalgia to go with it.  The Viennese playing is priceless and Moralt, who died quite early in his conducting career shows much ability and taste for this unusual music.

Rome Opera House Orchestra

GLUCK
"Orfeo ed Euridice" - Complete Orchestral Music

$12.00 per CD

Usually we don't think about Pierre Monteux conducting music of the mid 18th century.   Gluck's music is unique as it is the major bridge between the late baroque and the classical period.  The Rome Opera House Orchestra sound quite special almost as though it learned from their elders in Italian conservatories from a hand-me-down playing tradition dating from a distant past.  It all works out very well especially in the glorious "Dance of the Blessed Spirits" and the "Dance of the Furies" first heard here as chase music in those old "Hoppy" cowboy flics.

Symphony Nº 1 in B-Flat Major 'Spring'  IN STEREO

$12.00 per CD

The elusive Antal Dorati /CSO Schubert "Unfinished" is finally on CD and transferred from a unplayed quality Mercury LP. The recording suffers from very abrasive sonics making it difficult to enjoy as the performance is a knockout. We took care of that, letting the Dorati and the Chicago Symphony bloom forth in very good sound and plenty of dynamics range. The Swarowsky Schumann "Spring" has always been a favorite recording here with very unusual stereo effects. The Vienna woodwinds and brass are especially fine here and Swarowsky drives it all forward with momentum.  Highly recommended!  High Quality MP3 PRO sample here

$12.00 per CD

Combing through the Haydn House 45 rpm collection has brought us this fine array of Boston Pops performances under the special care of Arthur Fiedler.  All has been carefully transferred to the digital medium including restoration of the overall sound of each disc. Most were recorded in the late 1940's and early 1950's  which mean that Fiedler was conducting Serge Koussevitzky's Boston Symphony musicians less the first desk players.  You cannot go wrong with this release which is filled with nostalgia and demos the intensity this music can be with the right orchestra and conductor.  Highly recommended!  High Quality MP3 PRO sample here
