FRITZ LEHMANN Conductor Berlin Philharmonic Bamberg Symphony* Orchestras
MOZART OVERTURES: Marriage of Figaro, Abduction from the Seraglio, Idomeneo, Impresario, Magic Flute, Cosi Fan Tutte, Don Giovanni, La Clemenza di Tito Symphony Nş 32 in G Major, K. 318* BRAHMS: Tragic Overture, Op. 8
$12.00 per CD MONO
Early 1950's mono recording of Mozart's Overtures with Fritz Lehmann conducting the Berlin Philharmonic in masterful performances of this music. The Symphony No. 32 is no less thoughtful. Mint Decca/DG LPs were secured for these transfers. Immaculate interpretations! The Brahms Tragic Overture here is a gem of a performance. Brass is powerful and majestic making this a strong candidate for an the all-time preferred recording of this music. Spectacular from beginning to end.
HERMANN SCHERCHEN Vienna State Opera Orchestra
BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto Nş 2 in B Flat Major, Paul Badura-Skoda, piano RACHMANINOV: Piano Concerto Nş 2 in C Minor, Edith Farnadi, piano
Two more Scherchen recordings. An unusual coupling according to traditional releases but as Toscanini said, "Tradition is the last bad performance." Good sound taken from low played Westminster WL pressings (red label) and played back through our McIntosh C20 tube/valve preamp (modified to our specs) with compensations set to LP - not RIAA - The result? a master transfer with a master recommendation. (NB: All pre 1955 LP pressings are transferred at Haydn House with the proper playback curves as recommended, according to LP manufacturer, in the McIntosh C20 manual.)
JORG DEMUS, piano ARTUR RODZINSKI Vienna State Opera Orchestra
SCHUMANN Piano Concerto in A minor Konzertstück for Piano and Orchestra in G Major Concert-Allegro with Introduction for Piano & Orchestra in D Minor
The 1953 recording in the Konzerthaus, Vienna, transferred to CD from a Red Label, un-played condition Westminster LP release. The Orchestra is the best of the Vienna State Opera orchestras, with Vienna Philharmonic musicians. Demus and Rodzinski tend to a more romantic approach rather than classical in the concerto, opting for the big line. Overall sound is admirable for the era.
EDUARD VAN BEINUM Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam
BRUCKNER: Symphony in D Minor "Die Nulte" (Historical 1955 Live Concert Recording)
Recorded live in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam on March 13, 1955 and Van Beinum bring forth one of the most powerful performances ever of this early Bruckner Symphony. This performance is fresh and vibrant committed. Every effort was made to maintain the sonic integrity of the original 50-year-old recording with no overuse of noise reduction.
